The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) released that the number of foreign visitors to Japan in April 2024 reached 3.043 million, making it the second highest in history (the highest was 3.082 million in March 2024). Notable trends this month include China overtaking other nations to become the second largest source of visitors after South Korea. Additionally, travel from Southeast Asia has stabilized, with Indonesia setting a new monthly record, and four Southeast Asian countries experiencing over 30% growth in visitor numbers in the first four months of 2024 compared to 2019, as summarized by Haize Capital.

1. The cherry blossom season in April significantly boosted tourist arrivals in Japan. China notably accelerated its recovery to pre-pandemic visitor levels, contributing to a robust resurgence in the overall Chinese-speaking market. The top five sources of foreign visitors to Japan were South Korea (661,000), China (533,000), Taiwan (460,000), the United States (229,000), and Hong Kong (185,000), with year-over-year growth rates of 41.6%, 392.7%, 41.4%, 57.7%, and 20.7%, respectively.

2.In addition to rapid growth from South Korea and the Chinese-speaking markets, the end of Ramadan also boosted outbound travel demand from Southeast Asia. Indonesia recorded a historic high in April with 63,000 visitors, a 57.2% increase from April 2019. Looking at the first four months of 2024, the Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam all saw growth exceeding 30% compared to the same period in 2019, with rates of 42.7%, 38.1%, 31.5%, and 31.4%, respectively. Given ASEAN's growth, several Southeast Asian countries are projected to soon exceed 500,000 annual visitors to Japan, with the Philippines and Vietnam potentially reaching over a million visitors within three years post-pandemic.
