The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) recently released its "2024 Economic Impact Trends Report." While WTTC regularly publishes reports, this one holds particular value due to the post-pandemic reshaping of the travel market, which differs from 2019. Haize Capital has summarized key points as follows:

1. According to WTTC, the global travel and tourism industry’s GDP reached $9.9 trillion in 2023 and is projected to hit $11.1 trillion in 2024. This means 1 in every 10 dollars globally is spent on travel (indicating other industries are heavily squeezed by global stagflation).

2. In 2023, the top three countries contributing to global travel and tourism GDP were the U.S., China, and Germany, with a combined value of $4.15 trillion, representing 42% of the global total.

3. WTTC predicts that over the next decade, China will surpass the U.S. as the world’s largest travel market, while India will rise from 8th to 4th place.

4. The top five destinations benefiting from international visitor spending in 2023 and their spending growth compared to 2019 were: Saudi Arabia (91.3%), Turkey (38.2%), Kenya (33.3%), Colombia (29.1%), and Egypt (22.9%).

5. By 2025, the global travel and tourism GDP is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels, a promising outlook considering global stagflation and deglobalization due to the Russia-Ukraine war and U.S.-China geopolitical tensions.

WTTC's assessment of the top 10 countries by travel and tourism contribution to GDP in 2023:

1. USA: $2.36 trillion

2. China: $1.30 trillion

3. Germany: $487.6 billion

4. Japan: $297 billion

5. UK: $295.2 billion

6. France: $264.7 billion

7. Mexico: $261.6 billion

8. India: $231.6 billion

9. Italy: $231.3 billion

10. Spain: $227.9 billion
