The pet market in South Korea appears to be gradually taking off. The number of households raising pets was estimated at 6.38 million in 2020, up 8 percent from the previous year's 5.91 million. The figure roughly translates to 28 percent of the country's 23 million households，according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Another survey released by the ministry showed that approximately 40,000 pets rescued by animal shelters were adopted throughout 2020. It is estimated that the ratio of cats to dogs among the adopted animals is about 1: 3. 1.2% are animals other than cats and dogs.
