Amazon's head of PR Jay Carney has recently left. The full title is top public relations and public policy executive. It certainly has no major impact on Amazon's market value, but there are some details worth talking about.
Generally speaking, public relations is PR, and public policy is GR, the difference is that they deal with different targets. PR plays a more important role in early years, which was usually under marketing-related departments. With the heavy regulation over the Internet in recent years, especially for tech firms, the anti-monopoly laws of various countries often impose penalties based on the percentage of annual income; it would be serious if there is a penalty. Communication with governments became more important and complicated, it is more common for PR/GR to be combined with legal as a separate department. For example, after Jay Carney resigned, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy asked the successor to be someone who could adjust the company's relationship with Washington and the legislative bodies of various countries during antitrust review; Carney worked as White House press secretary for the Obama administration before joining Amazon.
Incidentally, where did Jay Carney go after leaving Amazon? He went to Airbnb as global head of policy and communications, and Chris Lehane, formerly in that position, joins venture capitalist Katie Haun's crypto fund Haun Ventures.
