東亞新冠確診與死亡數排名世界前列，為何？
East Asia topps the world's new COVID cases and deaths, why?

Recently, the number of new confirmed Covid-19 cases announced by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has exceeded 70,000 for several consecutive days, fanning concerns over a new virus wave this winter. In fact, South Korea is not a special case, the confirmed cases in Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong are all among the top in the world. There are a few points worth observing:

1. East Asia as a whole ranks among the top in the number of confirmed cases and deaths in the world. Maybe it’s not because the Covid-19 virus only affects East Asians, but because East Asian countries are more rigorous, and they are still serious about counting cases til now.

2. At present, except for Africa, the coverage rate of vaccination with more than two doses is not low in all countries. From this point of view, breakthrough infections are inevitable, and concerns about virus waves in the coming winters may not be overanxious.

3. Of course, there is also good news. At present, in countries with statistics, the death rate is roughly in the per thousand, for example, the death rate in South Korea is 0.11% recently. It is also true that vaccines can effectively reduce the death rate caused by the virus.

近期韓國疾病預防控制署(KDCA, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency)公告的Covid-19新確認病例，已連續多日超過7萬人，引發了韓國人對今冬新病毒浪潮的擔憂。其實韓國不是特例，台灣、日本 、香港都在世界排名前列，有幾點值得觀察：

1. 整個東亞都在世界確診與死亡數的排名前列，也許不是因為Covid-19病毒只侵害東亞人，可能是東亞都比較嚴謹，直到現在都還認真統計病例。

2. 目前除了非洲，各國兩劑以上疫苗接種覆蓋率並不低。這樣看起來，突破性感染難以避免，未來冬季都會出現病毒浪潮的擔憂應該不是過慮。

3. 當然也有好消息，目前看，有統計的國家，死亡率大體都在千分比，比如近期韓國的死亡率為0.11%，疫苗有效讓病毒引發的死亡率降低也是事實。

최근 질병관리청(KDCA, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency)가 발표한 코로나19 확진자가 며칠째 7만명을 넘어서면서 올겨울 전염병 발생 상황 우려가 커지고 있다. 사실 한국은 특례가 아니다. 대만, 일본, 홍콩의 확진자는 모두 세계의 선두 자리를 차지한다. 다음 몇개 사항에 유의할 만하다.

1. 동아시아는 전체로서 확진자와 사망자 수에서 세계 선두 자리를 차지한다. 아마도 이것은 코로나19가 동아시아에만 영향을 미치기 때문이 아니다. 동아시아 국가들이 전염병 관리에서 더욱 엄격하기 때문이다. 지금까지도 그들은 여전히 진지하게 병례를 집계하고 있다.

2. 현재 아프리카를 제외한 모든 국가에서 2회 이상 백신 접종률이 낮지 않다. 이런 관점에서 돌파 감염은 불가피하며 다가오는 겨울 바이러스의 물결에 대한 우려는 지나치지 않을 수도 있다.

3. 물론 좋은 소식도 있다. 현재 통계가 있는 국가 중 사망률은 대략 천분의 일인데, 예를 들어 한국의 최근 사망률은 0.11%다. 백신이 바이러스로 인한 사망률을 효과적으로 낮출 수 있다는 것도 사실이다.
