如果說軟銀(JP: 9984)在OYO與WeWork上的失敗投資，是因為對過往成功邏輯的"路徑依賴"，人有錯手，馬有失蹄；軟銀近期在IRL的失敗投資，就是真正沒有任何藉口的毀滅性挫敗。
IRL是總部位於美國舊金山社交媒體新創公司，公司由Abraham Shafi於2016年成立，於2023年6月25日宣告永久關閉；關閉的主因是，公司董事會經調查後確認，公司所謂月活躍(MAU)2000萬的用戶中，有95%的用戶是“自動化用戶或機器人(automated or from bots)”。
這件事對軟銀形象最大的傷害在於，IRL自創立以來，總募資金額為1.97億美金，其最後一輪C輪融資，軟銀就以11億美金的估值投了1.7億美金，可見軟銀對IRL的重要性。軟銀的投審會既然做了如此非凡的決定，理論上必定有基於行業層面的專業評估與查核；而在如此重要的投資中，軟銀的盡責審核竟然沒有查出公司95%的用戶是機器人，這讓人對軟銀的專業能力感到匪夷所思。而最後整件事曝光也不是因為軟銀的內部審計收效，而是IRL員工在內部向高階經理人陳述懷疑後被解雇，然後員工就轉做為吹哨人對媒體披露，經由科技媒體報導後，董事會才啟動了內部調查。
如果要說這件事給了投資圈與創業圈什麼啟示的話，除了"不要迷信巨頭，要勇於自己下判斷、自己負責"之外，那就是，"請善待自己的員工"。

The perhaps ill-fated investments of SoftBank (JP: 9984) in OYO and WeWork can be attributed to "path dependency" on past successful model, as the saying goes, humans err and horses stumble; SoftBank's recent failed investment in IRL, however, is a truly devastating setback for which there are no excuses.
IRL is a social media startup headquartered in San Francisco, USA. The company, established by Abraham Shafi in 2016, announced its permanent closure on June 25, 2023. The primary reason for the closure is that after an investigation by the company's board, it was confirmed that of the so-called 20 million monthly active users (MAUs), 95% were "automated users or bots".
It is damaging for SoftBank's image, IRL has raised a total of $197 million in funding since its inception, in its last Series C round, SoftBank invested $170 million at a valuation of $1.1 billion, demonstrating its high regard for IRL. However, during such an important investment, SoftBank's due diligence astonishingly failed to uncover that 95% of the company's users were bots, which raises questions about SoftBank's professional competence. Furthermore, the entire issue came to light not because of SoftBank's internal audit effectiveness, but because an IRL employee was fired after expressing suspicions to senior management internally. The dismissed employee then turned whistleblower and disclosed the information to the media. It was only after the tech media reported it that the board of directors initiated an internal investigation.
If there's any lesson to be gleaned: "don't blindly trust giants, have the courage to make your own judgments and take responsibility," and "treat your employees well."

소프트뱅크(JP: 9984)의 OYO와 WeWork에 대한 투자 실패의 원인을 과거 성공 모델에 대한 '경로 의존'으로 귀결한다면, 소프트뱅크의 최근 IRL 투자도 실패한 것은 진정한 파멸적인 실패로 아무런 변명도 없다.
IRL은 미국 샌프란시스코에 본사를 둔 소셜미디어 스타트업이다. Abraham Shafi는 2016년 IRL을 설립했으며 2023년 6월 25일에 영구 폐쇄를 발표했다. 폐쇄의 주된 이유는 회사 이사회의 조사를 거쳐 이른바 2,000만명의 월간 활성 사용자(MAUs) 중 95%가 '자동화 사용자 또는 로봇(automated or from bots)'이라는 것을 확인했기 때문이다.
